On Friday Nov 11th 2016, I was the Ring Girl at ‘Need for Speed’ the #HogtownPro live wrestling event in Toronto. That means I accompanied each athlete to and from the wrestling ring and took their robes and carted away their excess gear which I had to keep safe in the back.
Yes its a little off-brand for me, the event was a small left turn from my usual role as wing woman, and dating expert. This was something else to be sure; I was offered the job because the wrestling league administrators thought I’d look good in leather, and I took the position because I know I do!
Speedball Mike Bailey, one of the stars on the program that night was up against some real tough guys including the reigning champ Goliath Ayala, and I must say it was a real pleasure to watch his acrobatics as he wrestled the bigger opponents. He’s a rising star and he sure brings a lot of stuff with him out to the ring.
Each #HogtownPro live wrestling event is filmed for Roger’s Television, and so now you can tune into the Need for Speed episode (I’ll tweet or Facebook details) and you’ll see me in the crowd as I help the performers get to and from their action encounters. I certainly stayed clear of the action in the ring, and even managed to avoid the skirmishes that happened outside the ring..
I like performing a small part in a big production and helping to make events successful; all night long I felt like I was part of the team. I got free drinks from the wrestling admin and enjoyed tasty pizza from the sponsor, Amicos late night pizza in Toronto. The wrestlers were very courteous and thanked me after each match.
Ring girls are wrestling performers too!
So well organized was the HogtownPro wrestling event, everything was taken care of by sponsors and administrators, including free food (pizza) and beverages for all the performers. Here’s one of my favourite wrestling stars, Martin Casanova or The Lover – he plays a smooth talking pickup artist, and always seems to be in character.
The Lover has a sidekick, a pretty girl named Jessie who’s always on her phone. She never sees his amazing victories in the wrestling ring because she’s so self absorbed with her gadget.
These two characters have a funny routine. That night Martin debuted his new sports guard from Archer Dental and I can see why the dentist choose him; he has nice teeth. The crowd cheered loudest when Jessie kissed Martin’s opponent Erik Donnelly on the cheek. And The Lover went crazy with rage… and won the match.
Here are two more sponsors. John Conn runs Standard Telecom which got involved when the wrestling league was hacked by bad wrestlers who sought to remove the good wrestlers from the Nov 11th match card (and the Hogtown roster itself), if you believe the office phone hacking story on the Hogtown Wrestling blog and John also wrote about office phone hacking on Standard Telecom blog. That story line came to a conclusion that evening when Misterion was called out and fired by the President of the Hogtown Wrestling League in front of everyone.
Ring girls are part of the show, and at one point we heard the President Matthew Bradly telling some other performers backstage that the league was growing in prominence as reflected by the celebrity factor of the Ring Girls at the shows – last month at Socktoberfest Raymi the Minx was the Ring Girl and next month it’ll be someone else; once was enough for me.
